U.S. Customs Seizures in December: Monkeys, Jewelry, Vehicle Parts, and More

clarkespositolaw

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is the frontline defense in preventing illegal and dangerous goods from entering the United States. Every day, CBP officers across the country work tirelessly to enforce regulations and seize violative shipments. These efforts help protect American consumers and businesses, ensuring that only safe and compliant products reach the U.S. market. This past month saw several major seizures—here are a few highlights.

Three Monkeys Intercepted at Brownsville Port of Entry

CBP officers at the Brownsville Port of Entry intercepted three live monkeys being smuggled into the U.S. without the proper permits. The monkeys were concealed in a passenger vehicle and posed significant public health and safety risks. The case illustrates CBP’s commitment to enforcing wildlife import regulations and protecting both animal welfare and public safety.

$1.8 Million in Counterfeit Jewelry Intercepted in Louisville

CBP officers in Louisville intercepted a shipment containing counterfeit earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and watches valued at over $1.8 million, if genuine. The items, which violated intellectual property rights, were destined for a residence in New York. This seizure shows CBP's crucial role in protecting intellectual property and ensuring that counterfeit goods do not harm U.S. businesses or deceive consumers.

$1.4 Million in Counterfeit Vehicle Parts Seized in Philadelphia

CBP officers in Philadelphia seized counterfeit vehicle parts valued at $1.4 million, including imitation brake pads and bearings, bearing fraudulent Pennsylvania state inspection certifications. This seizure prevented potentially dangerous parts from reaching U.S. roads.

Testosterone and Steroids Seized at Laredo Port of Entry

CBP officers at the Laredo Port of Entry seized more than 21 pounds of testosterone and other steroids hidden within a passenger vehicle. This large cache of illegal substances was intercepted before it could enter the U.S. market. The driver was arrested, and this case shows CBP’s ongoing efforts to curb the importation of controlled substances and protect public health and safety.

$320K in Counterfeit Cash Seized at JFK Airport

CBP officers at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) made a significant seizure ahead of the busy holiday shopping season, intercepting $304,500 in counterfeit U.S. currency. In collaboration with U.S. Secret Service agents, CBP took action after identifying the fake money in a shipment, preventing it from circulating in the U.S. economy. This seizure illustrates the critical role CBP plays in protecting the integrity of U.S. currency and ensuring that counterfeit bills do not harm American businesses or consumers.

Dulles Agriculture Specialists Prevent Dangerous Insect Pests from Entering U.S.

CBP agriculture specialists at Washington Dulles International Airport intercepted two dangerous insect pests that posed a serious risk to U.S. agriculture. One pest was a first-in-port find, while the other had not been seen in the U.S. in over 40 years. These pests could have had devastating effects on U.S. crops and ecosystems. This seizure shows the vital role of CBP in safeguarding U.S. agriculture by preventing harmful invasive species from entering the country.
