Importing goods into the United States is a critical step for many businesses, but it can quickly become overwhelming if you aren’t familiar with the rules. At the Clark-Esposito Law Firm, P.C., we help importers cut through the complexity and avoid costly mistakes. Click the button below to schedule an intake meeting with our office.

When bringing products into the country, it’s important to understand that every shipment must comply with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) requirements. That means making sure your goods meet all tariff obligations, import restrictions, and safety standards before they arrive. Overlooking these rules can result in delays, fines, or even the loss of your ability to import. Learn more about potential CBP penalties here.

Another essential part of the process is product classification. Each item must be assigned a Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS) code, which determines the duties and taxes that apply. Getting the classification right saves time and money, while an error can trigger penalties and unexpected costs.

Certain goods require more than just paperwork. Products such as food, pharmaceuticals, and textiles often need special permits or licenses, and failing to secure them can mean your shipment is held up, or worse, seized altogether.

Good record-keeping is also a must. Importers must maintain invoices, shipping documents, and customs forms for at least five years. Keeping thorough records not only supports compliance but also provides protection in case of an audit.

It’s important to remember that importing is a privilege, not a guarantee. Businesses that don’t follow the rules risk losing that privilege entirely. The good news is that with the right guidance, importers can stay compliant, reduce risks, and move their goods efficiently.

We work with importers to make sure they understand the regulations, manage their risks, and set up strategies that keep their businesses running smoothly. If you’d like to learn more about the basics of importing, watch our video above.
