The U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) recently announced a delay in the scheduled automation of the $800 de minimis threshold for duty-free imports, which was initially scheduled to roll out on September 28, 2024 within the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE). This threshold allows individuals to receive shipments valued at $800 or less, per person per day, without paying duties. CBP was set to automate the rejection of shipments that exceeded this limit, but feedback from the trade community led to a postponement.
Instead of immediately rejecting ineligible shipments, CBP will introduce a system warning on January 11, 2025. This warning will alert shippers when a package may exceed the $800 threshold. Full automation of shipment rejections will follow at least 30 days after the warning system goes live, giving the trade community time to adjust.
The goal is to ensure compliance with Section 321, which governs duty-free shipments, while making sure the changes won’t disrupt the flow of goods at U.S. ports. CBP remains committed to balancing enforcement with the smooth movement of legitimate goods through U.S. borders.
