Recent tariff changes between the United States and China are shifting the trade landscape once again. For businesses that import or export goods, staying ahead of these developments is essential. If you want to reduce risk and control costs while ensuring compliance, schedule an intake meeting with our office today by clicking the link below:

On May 12, 2025, the President issued an Executive Order temporarily reducing the reciprocal tariff on certain imports from China, including goods from Hong Kong and Macau, from 125% to 10%. This change is set to remain in effect for ninety (90) days. In response, China reduced its retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%.

Despite this short-term relief, many imports from China remain subject to overlapping duties, meaning multiple tariffs can apply simultaneously to the same product. This creates a complex and layered system of fees that requires careful navigation. Additionally, the United States maintains a 20% tariff on certain Chinese goods related to fentanyl concerns, which remains unaffected by the recent reductions.

In the face of uncertainty and shifting policies, our team is determined to help businesses like yours. We can identify strategies to reduce duties, resolve customs issues, and help ensure that importers meet their compliance obligations. One such approach is tariff engineering, which involves designing or modifying a product to legally qualify for a lower duty rate. It is a lawful method that requires careful planning. Having experienced counsel available when new trade measures are announced can help businesses gain clarity and feel secure in a volatile trade environment. Don't wait to find out how these shifting policies could impact your bottom line. Give our office a call today at (917) 546-6997 or schedule a complimentary intake meeting, we would be happy to speak with you.
